Two hours had passed in the darkness of Max’s room, and he was already fast asleep—that had never been a problem for him, just me. I hadn’t caught so much as a wink the entire time, contenting myself to watching the Shifter’s features slowly relax with each passing minute, erasing the stress that I’d carved into him.

My hand was underneath his pillow, just below his head, and it was an odd kind of intimacy, somehow almost more personal than the sex we’d had a few hours earlier, just lying there and feeling his weight against the palm of my hand even with the thick pillow separating us. It reminded me of the way we were now—close, but held away from each other by the space we’d created. We could pretend that it wasn’t there for a while, try to force ourselves to be together even when we knew it couldn’t work, but if there was going to be any chance of actually being one permanently, we’d have to stop lying and fight out the distance. It was just as likely to tear us apart as it was to bring us together, but if we tried to keep pretending, we were going to lose each other anyway. Max was ready to have it out, but I wasn’t. Honestly, I wasn’t sure that I ever would be.

I wrapped my hand gently around Max’s wrist and lifted his arm off me, sliding down the bed to get out from under it. I set it back down, just a soft murmur drifting up out of the Shifter’s sleep-cloaked haze in reply. The shadows covered my exit as I slipped off the bed and across the carpet, out into the living room.

The couch welcomed me back with open arms, and I started weaving together a string of marks that would drag me out of sleep an hour before Max’s alarm went off. I’d sneak back into his room and his arms, and by the time he woke up he’d never know that I had even left.

I let the spells take hold in my body and closed my eyes as the subtle warmth took over my mind, pulling me gently into the welcoming, lonely black for the first time in days.
